"A FLOWER THAT COMES DOWN FROM THE SKY..."
On April 26, 1998, the Church of Jesus in the Eucharist was inaugurated in the presence of Chiara Lubich in the Mariapolis Ginetta . In her diary she wrote: "Yesterday I had a dream, a dream with my eyes wide open, if you understand. I also imagined here a little church, built on the highest point [...] like a flower coming down from the sky. I dreamed of it dedicated to Jesus in the Eucharist exposed for continuous adoration [...] But here, dreams never stay in dreams [...] I would like the little church I dreamed of to be like a small palace for the King of the Mariapolis. Yes, because Jesus is King. [...] He is the King of our hearts, of our little towns, of our Movement, of the Church and of humanity."
In her book about the history of Mariápolis Ginetta, Maria do Socorro, a focolarina who lived with Ginetta and the people who were part of the construction of the Church of Jesus the Eucharist, says: "The design and construction of the Church materialized this “dream”, in a continuous exchange of ideas and solutions in the light of Jesus present among all the people who, in various ways, gave their collaboration. The design work was done jointly by the three professionals who live here in Mariápolis, Miriam Reichert , an architect from Rio Grande do Sul, Francisca Norma C. Queiroga, a civil engineer from Paraíba, and Maria de Fátima Sousa, an electrical engineer from Minas Gerais.
In addition to the help and suggestions from many people, they received mainly from Ginetta Calliari , who accompanied them step by step during the design and throughout the construction. It took a lot of prayer and reflection to understand what this flower that descends from the sky would be. They read and reread Chiara's diary. They imagined a flower with roots in the sky, so the roof would be the petals.
The building was designed to seat 400 people, with a main door and two side doors. The sacristy is behind the presbytery. The sound control room and the confessional are located in the corners. The three large bells that adorn the church weigh around 600 kg and play the notes “B”, “C” and “E”. The phrases written on the bell are:
“I would like the Church I dreamed of to be a small palace for the King of the Mariapolis.” This phrase is taken from Chiara’s 1991 Diary;
“You, Jesus Forsaken with Mary Desolate, are my Only Good” (Cfr. Message from Chiara on 28/12/1995).
“He has filled the hungry with good things…”, from the Magnificat (Lk. 1:53.)
The three large “petals” that form the ceiling are a symbol of the Trinity. Its interior, which resembles the tent of the Ark of the Covenant, the tent of God who dwells among men, is illuminated by colored stained glass windows that direct the gaze and the soul to the One to whom the church is dedicated: Jesus in the Eucharist.
No wall touches the ceiling; from every angle, the exterior, the sky, can be glimpsed. The entire complex is permeated by light and gathered in its center. All the pillars, beams and walls are oriented towards a single point, as if the material were in permanent adoration of God. The floor rises in steps towards the tabernacle, and the ceiling also converges towards this central cone. The tabernacle, cylindrical and gilded, is surrounded by a circular stained glass window of incandescent colors, evoking the image of the “burning bush”. A light wooden structure, openwork and curved, a stylized canopy, composed of three parts, recalls the “crown of thorns” of the passion of Jesus. Inside the church there is a single image: a bronze sculpture, which represents, in an original way, the crucifixion of Jesus and at the same time the stabat of Mary at the foot of the cross. It is entitled “The only Good” (cf. Ps 16 (15).
Intense experiences were also had with other professionals, who made their practices and skills available in a climate of mutual help and respect. There was even sharing of the “tools” needed to carry out the work, such as scaffolding, winches, vibrators, etc. We witnessed true miracles and continue to witness them in relation to the maintenance and use of the Church over the years. Many were those who gave up their own savings or precious jewels of deep memories, those who donated their own time in fundraising activities, residents of Mariápolis and other regions of Brazil and abroad, for example, from North America and Belgium, as well as Italy. On the afternoon of April 26, 1998, the Church of Jesus Eucharist was solemnly inaugurated: an unforgettable moment in which the sacred atmosphere merged with the deep and overflowing joy of the thousand people present.
Chiara Lubich was there, accompanied by several of her collaborators from the Movement Center, as well as civil and religious authorities, including the then Jewish co-president of the Christian-Jewish Fraternity of São Paulo, Dr. Carlos Barbouth, the Mayor of Vargem Grande Paulista at the time (Mr. Roque de Morais) and several city councilors. After the inauguration ceremony, Chiara wanted to see all the details of the Church and, during the visit, she exclaimed: “It is splendor!”
CHIARA LUBICH
As a lay woman, she proposed themes and openings in the Church that would later be taken up by the Second Vatican Council. When no one spoke of rapprochement between civilizations, she invited young people to become “men of the world”, and she knew how to indicate the path of dialogue towards universal fraternity...
